The Next President

November 3, 2008

While Republicans wring their hands over the possibility of an Obama presidency, I have to wonder how bad would it be compared to the last 8 years. Could it be much worse? After reviewing the Bush years it’s sometimes hard to imagine it much worse. It’s no wonder the American people are looking for “change”. I’m looking for change. Unfortunately the change we will get with either candidate is not the right change. However,  I have to admit I sympathize with the lesser-of-two-evils mentality. While McCain is far far from being the right candidate for prez, Obama is far far far far far from being the one.

If Obama wins and the Senate and House of Representatives get a filibuster-proof super-majority what will prevent the lefties from imposing on us the agenda they have always dreamed of? It will start with the so called “fairness doctrine“. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will be quivering with delight at their first real chance to “hush Rush”. I will bet you money that bill is re-introduced in the first one hundred days. The next Supreme Court appointee will make all the difference in how the constitution is twisted… er I mean interpreted. Do you think the Dream Team, the un-holy trinity of Obama, Pelosi and (as Rush refers to him) Dingy Harry will appoint and confirm a strict constructionist? I must laugh. Sorry Carl Spackler.

Obama’s proposed tax cut (can you call it that?) will effectively turn the IRS into another massive welfare agency giving handouts to people who haven’t paid taxes. They’ll raise capital gains tax, nationalize health insurance, raise the minimum wage, implement cap and trade taxes, impose “windfall” taxes on “big oil”, become buddies with Chavez and other various dictators around the world, and make ACORN a federal beauracracy. Well, maybe not the last one. But I’d bet they’d like to try!

Obama doesn’t think guns are good. Oh, he says he thinks hunting is OK and all, but in reality he has supported outlawing guns at many levels. He along with Biden did not vote to confirm Roberts or Alito to the Supreme Court. Without both of those men we could very well have had the first Supreme Court decision upholding the banning of guns and making defending your home a criminal act. Better think twice folks.

Should you support the McCain/Palin ticket? That’s up to you. If you know me or you’ve been reading my blogs, you know I have been an outspoken opponent of McCain all along. However, the prospect of the words “Congratulations, President Obama” being spoken on January 20 sends shivers up my spine. I don’t like McCain. I don’t like Obama more.

However this election turns out, I can only hope the hopelessness of this campaign season will energize the true conservatives (I really mean libertarians) to work hard to put up real honest-to-goodness liberty minded candidates the next election cycle. Only then can we turn this runaway train around and get it heading in the right direction.

Fortunately, my hope does not lie in a president. If that were true we are of all men most miserable. (I borrowed that from the apostle Paul). My hope lies in the sovereign Creator of the universe. I should not fear what man can do to me. (Ps. 56:11) Regardless of the election results, I will be joyful. God is sovereign over all. He appoints our rulers. (Romans 13) Those of us that may be included in the hand-wringing group would do well to remember the aformentioned truths.
